Common Questions About Memorials
Getting Started
How do I get started with designing a monument?
The best place to start is by booking an appointment or contacting us to talk through your needs. We can help you compare monument styles, review granite options, discuss cemetery requirements, and begin shaping a design that fits your family, budget, and preferences.
Can you help if I am not sure what style of memorial I want?
Yes. Many families are not sure at first which memorial style is the best fit. We can help you compare options such as upright headstones, slants, flat markers, benches, bronze memorials, cremation memorials, and custom designs so you can move forward with clarity. Explore monument styles
Timing & Installation
How long does it usually take for a monument to be completed and set?
In many cases, it takes about 10 weeks from approval of the final proof for a monument to be completed and set in place. That timeline can vary depending on the season, the cemetery, and foundation scheduling.
Can winter affect the timeline?
Yes. Winter weather can affect the timing of foundations and setting work, especially when ground conditions make installation impractical or delayed. Some projects may need to wait for more favorable weather before the monument can be set properly.
Does the cemetery affect timing or installation?
Yes. Cemeteries often have their own rules, schedules, and approval timelines. In some cases, cemetery requirements or delays can affect how quickly a monument can be installed, even after the design and production work is finished.
Granite & Materials
Are granite colors artificial?
No. Granite colors are not artificial surface colors. The color and character of each granite come from the natural stone itself.
Where do the different granite colors come from?
Different granite colors come from different quarries and regions. Miller Monuments offers granite from a range of locations, and natural mineral composition is what creates the differences in color and pattern. These are natural materials, not painted or artificially colored surfaces. Explore our Granite Colors and Finishes page.
Will the final stone look exactly like a sample or swatch?
Granite is a natural material, so each piece will have its own variation in grain, movement, and pattern. Samples and swatches are helpful for direction, but the final stone may have natural differences that make it unique. Compare granite colors and finishes
Existing Monuments & Updates
Can you add lettering to an existing monument?
Yes. Many monuments are placed before their time of need and later need the final date of death added. We offer cemetery lettering and sandblasting services to complete existing memorials with care and consistency. Learn more about our services
Do you clean existing monuments?
Yes. Over time, monuments can become dirty from weather, birds, shade, or mildew. We offer monument cleaning services to help restore a memorial’s appearance and keep it looking well cared for. View memorial services.
Appointments & Working Together
Appointments are preferred, but walk-ins are welcome when possible. Scheduling an appointment is the best way to make sure we can give your project the time and attention it deserves.
Do I need an appointment?
Can you work with families who are not nearby?
Yes. We can help with design from a distance, including working through email and or video call when needed. This can be especially helpful for families who live out of state or are coordinating decisions from more than one location.
Can we meet at the cemetery or at your office?
Yes. Depending on the situation, we may meet with families at our office, at a cemetery, or in another setting that is helpful for the design process. We want the process to feel clear, personal, and manageable.
